Why is it that most here wont make an exact replica-except the body shape- or the pedals were emulating? Example- Someone makes a Ts-808 they call it some other name and paint it a different color? Is it from fear of Ibanez coming after them? HEHE but seriously, I do wonder cause I decided that for fun Im planning to TRY to make replicas of the ones I built as good as i can and using the correct names- I never plan on selling these nor probably using them in a way where it would somehow infringe on some obvious copyrite laws. Theyll just be in my basement to be admired by myself , family and friends and maybe on line a few times just to show off. I know i can be the only one thats not afraid- if thats the case-or for that matters -cares-
Anyone? Why no exact replica clones?

By the way- about a week or 2 ago someone cloned a ts-808 w decals and everything-Looked Fckn AMAZING! I hope i can find that pic/link or person that made that to tell them great job! Im inspired by it.

i know for me it's because i want something that feels like my own.  I haven't built a circuit yet that didn't involve modifying it from the schematic, so why should i label it as the same pedal?

Well, I guess if it was an old, out-of-production pedal that could be pretty cool.  But personally, I like to come up with funny names, and stretch my creativity by creating my own design.

So I would say that I make mine different from the original because I want it to look different than the original.   :D

Hell, I don't even name DIY pedals by what they're called.  I finally installed a Jawari into a 1590B on the weekend and labelled it "The Blue Raja", because I only had blue paint, and because I like the movie "Mystery Men".

Seriously though, I doubt you would want anyone building a piece-of-crap pedal and sticking your name on it.  The ethical thing, patent law or not, is to NOT try and pass off your own work as someone else's.

Mark-Itrs obvious that when you clone a ts-808 It wont look like the actual thing for many reasons-The box, labels, ect.. so theyll be no confusing it with the real thing. But I guess for me, its more like a challenge in ability than anything else. I started this hobby cause I couldnt afford the real things and later could. Maybe Im a cheap ass? Its a DIY thing in my head that says, "To hell with those high prices! I can do it for less. And in SOME cases can. Others not. I just like the idea of seeing how close i can get in sound and shape to the original. Im not going to try to pass it off as a cheap knock off or fool anyone. Like the pic of the Ts 808 that someone posted here a week or 2 ago- I thought it was amazing! Looked VERy much like the real thing except he named it something else and the box was a Hammond. It was obvious it wasnt the real thing But DAMN it was sweet! I love my pedals for many different reason-Sometimes I just look at them for the hell of it -Aesthetic reasons? Example- Ill every now and then look at my Boss pedal board at all the various colors and types and think WOW! I love those little bastards! I collect by Boss collection for sound, quality and durability. But thats another story-Esp about the part where I love to look at my ts-9 and wonder how i could love such an ugly color..

Actually Mark, if you wanted to go the full 9 yards, you should have painted the pedal green.

Is it wrong to decorate your box in a way that says you love the original?  Nah, I don't think so.  Painting your 1590BB just the *right* colour with the white stripe around the perimeter isn't as blatant attempt to produce a counterfeit.  On the other hand, a visit to MusicToyz indicates that it's well past the point where you can count pedal-makers that use 1590B's and BB's on the fingers of two hands.  And a stroll through the archives also reveals that plenty of folks either have, or have expressed interest in, repackaging their pedals from less sturdy chassis (starts with a D) or from FET-based switching to TB switching in another box.  So the waters separating "the real thing" from counterfeits is getting murkier.  Could you pitch something on E-bay, claiming it was a vintage deal repackaged to suit a pedalboard?  Quite likely, these days.  Somebody, somewhere would be naive enough about the details of the original to think they were paying top dollar for an authentic item in a "newer chassis".

If you KNEW you were going to hang onto it forever (well, until your widow disposes of it in an estate sale), then sure, I suppose it could be your private tickle to have it say the name of the original on the box and try to cosmetically resemble it.  If I was gigging, and the inevitable gearhead was perusing my pedalboard between sets, though, I think I'd enjoy having them ask me about something with an offbeat name they've never heard of, than have them see a familiar name, mutter "I thought they looked different" to themselves and amble off.

Nothing the matter with that if it's only for personal consumption. I get a kick out of the way they clone graphics at this site. I don't know if they sell them, but it's a lot of work copying the original scheme.
