i m using the mod on a ts-9 reissue version...

ok .when i replace the tantalum tone caps...  to poly film caps (o.22mfd/35v) it sound damn crap... and the output for volume is very low.... when i on the pedal.. the sound is weaker than bypass...

help pls.. anyway wat is the original tone caps??? for ts-9 reissue

pls give me the name and value :D

MartyMart

Those caps should be 0.22uf or another way of marking, 220nf have you used the correct value ?

haha.. i dunno wherether i use the correct value... but i replace it with poly film caps (o.22mfd/35v)  it is orange color.. and it sound very crap...

PS : my tantalum  tone caps is brownish red. i wanna know wat it value and stuff...

MartyMart

The original tantalum caps are .22uf !!
The change should offer a slight improvement, but its subtle ! It should not sound "crap'
I use .22uf MMK 63volt poly caps in mine and it sounds nice along with all the other upgrades.
I was just thinking that you used .022 by mistake ?

If your sound is "weaker than when bypassed" then there is another problem, what else have you changed in the TS-9 ?

MartyMart

There's a magazine piece that Robert Keeley did, explaining with step by step instructions, how to make a TS9 into true bypass.
Can't remember where that is, but there may be a link from his site to it, or if you email him, he'll point you to it for sure.

It's interesting some people find this to be an improvement. I heard the change, but didn't like it. I thought it made my TS sound *generic* if that makes any sense.  IMO- the tants are part of the TS personality.

Interesting comment, i have not heard that change in isolation, well you would'nt hear it anyway, only as part of a big upgrade of a TS-9.
Its part of the "anatomy of the tube screamer" information and I know that Keeley does it also.
I may try to put back the tants and see how it changes, I'm quite happy with the overall TS-9 mod and have sold a few and done the same mod for friends, who also think its a nice improvement.

Cheers,

I heard a slight difference on just the tant to poly tone cap mod. That was when I was running 6 TS's at once to test different mods. Whether you hear it, or like it, depends on your ears and gear. I did like it. But then.... I seem to be the only one on the planet who likes replacing the 10uf electro in the output section with a 10uf tant.

Thats an interesting one, I change 5 or 6 of the 10uf electro caps in the BD-2 to tant also, really sounds "warm" and "Crisp" afterwards.
Just A/B'd an unmodded BD-2 with mine and the difference is huge !
I'll try that later, thanks,
