The "Joy Buzzer"...nothing groundbreaking here...basically 2 Bazz Fusses in series, with a switchable diode clipping stage between them, a "pregain" control, a switchable "octave" , power supply filtering, and reverse polarity protection, ...sort of a "refined Buzzbox" :D

This is a very good sounding fuzz...nasty, cool, early 70's kind of harshness. on the original, i used 1N963's instead of 1N914's, but the 914's should work absolutely fine. Having the switch for the octave is nice...put it on a footswitch so you can use the octave effect for solos, and the straight fuzz for rhythms. The "grind" switch is probably best left as a toggle switch, as its not a "drastic" difference...just a bit more "gnarliness"...you'll probably either love it or hate it :)

heres the schematic for you, should you wish to build it....

enjoy,

That looks great, I've no choice but to breadboard it.  Thanks!

You can remove the 2M2 resistor to ground, since it's in parallel with the 100k Pre-Gain control.  Also, a stopper resistor between Pregain lug 1 and ground may be a helpful addition.

Being a "fuzz whore", I'll have to build it. I like the Bazz Fuzz anyway, and it dirty little sister "Buzz Box", so this one ought to be right up my alley. What are you thinking for the value of the "stopping" resistor? Of course, I have no idea what a stopping resistor is or does, but I remember seeing them on several other circuits.

A stopper resistor, placed between Lug 1 and ground of a Gain control, raises the minimum setting of the pot from silence to an audible level.  I've found that a good starting point is usually 10% of the pot value.

The schematic has been altered to reflect the excellent suggestions you made....as far as the "stopper resistor", i put it as 10k on the schematic, though its likely that you may want to use a larger value...i havent had a chance to test values on my pedal yet...

If you want to get really crazy, add in a switch that swaps between the diode and a resistor in the first stage so basically you end up with a clean boost out of that stage. I did something like that on a Bazz Fuss I built a while back. Not sure how that would sound pounding the second stage, but it might be worth a shot.

i did something similar to that, though i just went with a resistor, and no switch....it turned out to be very "metal" sounding fuzz, good for stoner rock type songs, but more distortion than fuzz....i'd imagine if you swapped the 2 diodes to ground for germanium ones its help bring it back to "fuzzy-land" :)

the switch is a good idea, and if i do later versions, i'll probably do that...thanks !

...i thought i'd "bump" this thread, because i dug out this pedal again and was really astonished at how great it sounds. one thing i did change, however, was the 10k resistor to ground on lug 1 of the pregain pot...its been changed to a 1k, which gives a biit wider range of gain tones....

darn cool sounding circuit....  :D
