Text to speech software... sounds like whatever Steven Hawking uses. Probably sampled on a Kurtzweil k-2000s.

dunlop talkbox. Check the Pulse dvd, you can see DG using this thing.

Meanderthal

Must not be the talking I was thinking about. When I saw them do it live(vet stadium, 95), I didn't notice anybody with a plastic tube on their mic stand... but there were at least a dozen musicians on stage if ya count backup singers and all...and what I heard sounded nothing like a talkbox. Same sound on the cd. Maybe there's a talkbox guitar solo I'm not remembering...

Or maybe one of the keyboard players was playing pre-recorded samples. The strong Impression I got.

I'm 99% sure it is a talkbox which he uses at the Pulse DVD... not 100% sure if DVD matches CD though... will have to check that (have both here).

i can believe its a talkbox, does have a humanish vibe to it

slacker

It certainly sounds like a talkbox and according to gilmourish.com it's a Heil Talk Box.
I saw them at Earls Court and can't say I remember seeing him use it, that might be because I was sitting about 3 miles away in a cloud of other peoples weed  though  :icon_wink:
If you've got the original pulse CD, the one with the flashing LED. there's a picture of Gilmour in the booklet playing acoustic guitar and you can see what looks like the tube from a talkbox on the micstand.

southtown

my dads got the original with  the cover, i have a erm, well he umm yeah ya know :)

Meanderthal

Ok, yup, there's a tube on the mic stand. I'll be damned. Leave it to Gilmore to make a talk box sound like Steven Hawking. That's the most intelligable use of a talk box I've ever heard!
Hmmm... one other possibility just occurred to me. Wouldn't it be possible to use both a talk box and a vocoder simultaneously?  Bet you could understand the words alot better that way!

well, I'm thinking that would require the person with the tube in his mouth to actually speak out loud.  Would first of all be difficult to understand because dude has a tube in his mouth, and secondly, that talking would be reproduced by the system that is amplifying the tube signal.

Meanderthal

Yeah, you're right, stupid idea... the vocoder would only do its thing to the talk box sound, wouldn't work the way I was thinking. DOH! I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get a Heil Talkbox to do that. That is NOT a Frampton sound (please, spare me the flames, I know full well comparing Frampton to Gilmore is like comparing steak to textured vegetable protien), you can clearly understand every word, and in a way that dosen't sound like a guy with a tube in his mouth. Dosen't sound like a guitar either. I'm stumped.

But I know exactly how to get that sound through another method...
