Hey all -

I've been perusing this forum all day... all kinds of great stuff here.  My first project is a simple one - a volume pedal in an old crybaby housing.  The thing is, I need to find a 1 meg pot to replace the 100k Hot Potz I that was in the wah.  I looked at Small Bear, but apparently he's still closed.  Does anyone know where i could find this thing?

thanks
Peter

If all you're waiting for is one pot and don't need it right away I would wait until Small Bear opens again because with Digikey or Mouser you'll have to pay a lot of money for shipping and handling if you're only getting one part.

you do realize that a normal pot'll go quickly in a volume pedal if you use it a lot (I know I do). Remember to install Craig anderton's Volume pedal De-Scratcher (sorry...don't have the schematic..), if you do use a normal pot, as otherwise, it'll get all scratchy real qiuck.

You'll need a special pot with longer threads to fit into the crybaby's pot holder thingie.  An alpha pot MIGHT work, it just barely fits, but i wouldn't trust it to repeated use.  If you could find a way to file down the prongs the pot fits into to make them thinner you might have a shot at it.  That and you'll need a long shaft pot and some glue to glue the gear to the pot.

I couldn't find any long shaft pots online when i needed one but my local electronics store carries them from 1K to 1M.  If you would like one private msg me, $13 shipped.  That goes for anyone else as well.  The downside is they only come in linear taper and for a volume pedal audio taper is preferred.  But if you can't find one anywhere else...

Thanks all -

My main concern isn't really finding a 1 meg pot, but finding one that is the same size as the Hot Potz and has some provision for attaching the pinion gear.

In regards to the Anderton De-Scratchifier circuit - is this what you're talking about?  http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/humperdinck/223/craigvol.gif

Sir_Modulus - you say a normal pot will get scratchy real quick - do you know what the Hot Potz do to avoid this?

Thanks for all your help!

I havn't been inside one, but I did open up an old wah pot once (cant remember which) and instead of a normal metal spring contact wiping along the resistance track, there was a tiny block of graphite on the end of the wiper arm, like you see on the "brushes" of electric motors. In this case, the block had turned to dust (spread throughout the pot) and the remains of the arm was scratching away.

Personally, if i used a wah, i'd definitely use an optical system!
