interference with ruby

I finished my ruby.  I put it in an old band-aid tin.  I did ground the circuit to the box.  I tested with a continuity tester to confirm.

I get static.  Moving the ruby amp and/or the guitar around causes the static hum to get louder or softer.

Any ideas?

are you getting any signal through?  Or just static?  Is the circuit accidentally grounding out to the box?  Try taking it out of the box and playing it.  Also check your chip orientation and make sure everything is connected right (not hard with the ruby!) check your batttery as well.

Took it out of the box, same static.  Yes, normal signal goes through (damn, it sounds good).  Like I said, if I move it around, place it in different spots, move my guitar around, the hiss sounds different and can change in colume.  Also the hiss changes in volume with the volume pot.

I have a new battery in it, though it is reading 8.6V.  hmmm....

I was on the phone, funny thing is I get the same static hiss on that.

any big radio towers living next door?  :P

a lot of stuff can cause interference... like you said moving your guitar around affects it too... I get static when i'm playing in front of my comp.  when i had my cordless phone resting on top of my amp, i would hear a little "beep... beep... beep"  ... a somewhat cool way of creating such interference is holding a tv remote near your pickups and pressing buttons... i discovered that in my early days of playing, since i was lashed to a guitar for 6 hours a day... oh the glory days, how i miss thee

check grounds and all... but i dunno.  Its a funny thing... in my hometown, i have NO RF interference even without the circuit being in an enclosure, even just on breadboard!  but here in toronto (downtown, no less) sometimes my "tin can" builds like my ruby will pick up a bunch of radio stations if they're cranked.  tis a crazy world we live in. :(

There's some suggestions in the DIY FAQ too... dunno if they'll help since the problem doesnt seem to be limited to the ruby in your case... There's a simple fix courtesy of Eric Hensel, and good-practice tips from the one they call ZVEX...  so you know they're worthwhile.  come to think of it i should be doing this stuff myself... uhhh... bye now :P

Come to think about it, there is a CB/Shortwave repeater tower only a half a mile away just outside the window.  When I go to the otherside of hte house the hiss is much quieter...
