I am just starting to build efx and was wondering if there is any pieces of a circuit that are usually open to using different values.

I just building an Electra distortion and was informed that the 16v resistor was okay to use a 35v one.  So I guess there is some leeway available to all of this, but I am just looking for what to look for when I run into these kind of situations.

Any general rules of thumb?

As a side note, I just want to show off my first finished pedal...a simple A/B box, but I love it to death.  :D

Handy foot Cct. Very nice BOX.
rules of thumb yes, there are rules of thumb...reading is the first one. Another is thinking of a DMM as answers ... to questions you have to figure out about resistances and voltages etc.

While sifting for that one piece, you'll be exposed to lots of useful information linking around...
Always use capacitor with at least a little higher voltage rating than the actual voltage it will 'see'. Checking for shorts Before connecting the battery saves batteries 'n other stuff. Si's are cheaper to burn than Ge's, I use them for inital fire-ups of PNP FF's [etc.] I want my precocious Ge's to sound good in.
