Hi.
I'm wondering about how to mod my NYC Big Muff to respond better to bass.
I know if I switch the caps over I will get a better bass responce, but I'm just wondering which cap to switch. I want a really think bassy distortion, rather than a obvious mids and highs distorted and bass left unaffected.
I'm also slightly interested in the true bypass mod.
As you have probably guessed I'm a newbie to mods. I've built some fuzz boxes in the past.
If anyone has a schem or advice it will be aprechiated  :D

Email me at LocusLarsen@cox.net and I will send you a sketch I did for my personal use.  I just modded mine to true bypass.  I have the colors of all the wires they used and where they need to go on the new switch.

EDIT:

I will put the drawing on my website for a few days or weeks, but if anyone in the future digs this up and wants it, just email me.

Okay.  As you can see I reused most of the wires that were already in there.  I used a new on for the light blue, but that is only becuase it was too short to reach the new switch.  Yours should be the same color wires....but I would check to mke sure they are all going to the proper places just for a safe guard.

The only other wire is the Yellow on that is the bypass wire from the input to the output.

My drawing is probably a bit....sloppy....but the white wire is to ground the positive portion of the circuit while the effect is bypassed.  Its not a full-time ground, so make sure it goes where it needs to go.

Basically you will see two wires coming from the guitar jacks tip.  One is giong to the switch and the other is going to the effect in.  You need to desolder [from the jacks tip] the one going to the pc boards IN (light blue) connection.  Probably you will have to chagne out the wire for a longer one, so you will desolder the board connection too.  The rest of the wires are basically just getting new spots on the 3PDT footswitch.  (the old one is a DPDT switch if you don't already know....so you have to buy a 3PDT)

Any more questions, just let me know.

(you should also note that in the photo where I added the color chart, I drew the lugs horizontally instead of vertically)

Thanks a lot.
Anyone have any advice about cap. switching for a bass mod?

SolderBoy

you could also add a control for mixing the dry bass sound.

Ohh, sounds like a good idea. :D
How could I do this?

SolderBoy

ask me again in a week or so - this is the next project for my breadboard!

I'm guessing that buffering the input and splitting the clean signal through an attenuator then summing the output of this with the fuzz using a resistive mixer and maybe buffering this.  Could be overkill, though - might be a simpler way.  And I think there's several different muff circuits.  The opamp one will probably be easier to mod.  From memory, the big muff has quite a bit of gain, so matching the clean level with the fuzz might take some tinkering...

PS: I'm no EE - just a hobbiest with this stuff.  Maybe one of the more experienced guys will help...
