Clueless "artist" here...  :?

Since I'm horrible with a brush but have some great ideas for painting my pedals, I'm thinking I should go the paint marker route.

What should I be looking for?  Oil-based?  Alcohol-based?

The question is, if you want to put a clear coat over the markings, what combination of marker and coat does NOT result in the marks dissolvign away into sludge in the clear coat paint?
As well as, what markers are opaque enough for the purpose?
...really, it's harder to make a good enclosure than the electronics inside :x

Ive had good success with "Rustoleum" products for painting and paint pens from the auto parts store ("GI Joes" to be specific). Never had a problem with the clear coat smudging the lettering.

Minwax fast drying polyurethene is an awesome clear coat! I used it over cheap paint - on top of self eching primer and it seems to work well.
