Monroes caps?

What is the difference between a Monroes cap and a standard ceramic? They are minute compared to the same value in ceramic or film. I have used them as I can get them in values unavailable in others and they are so small they are easy to fit into strip board layouts. They work so I'm not that concerned but it's just that they are so small, do they have the same life as other caps? Should I be using them differently or are they a direct replacement. I can't find any info on them.
