I just picked up a used Tokai TOD-1 Overdrive yesterday, I figure it's a relic from the early eighties.

It's made in Japan, has bullet-proof construction like a Boss pedal and sounds very much like a good TubeScreamer clone. I was curious as to what type of opamp they used and it turns out that it's a "6458D" eight leg opamp, anybody familiar with this line of pedals or with this particular opamp?

I have a few "Tokai's"  all great pedals BTW !
Mine has an RC4558 in it ?  must be similar I guess?

MartyMart-

I wish mine had the 4558 but it still sounds like a TubeScreamer anyways, sounds really good as far as that goes.

Mine is painted black, is your TOD-1 black or is it the white/silver version that I've seen?

"Burstbucker" - My overdrive is black and metal with orange/red legend, I have a distortion and a chorus which are both kind of "champagne white" !! and plastic.
The metal versions are older, early 1980's I believe with the "plastic" ones being late '80's.
The chorus is VERY nice, all analog and gets quite "leslie-like" on fast settings, recommend it if you find one.
My favourite "'80's" brand was "Pearl" they failed with there pedal range
but they are all "superb' quality units.
The OD-5 overdrive is like a TS-808 with "eq" and a bit more "guts" to it, a FAB pedal, starting to get expensive, over a 100 bucks each these days.
Ha, wish I'd bought a hundred of them and a few hundred '808's....
I'd be quite "well off" now  :D
Cheers,
Marty.
