Newest Rat 2 pedals....

I just picked up a new Rat 2 (the newest incarnation with the tapered sides). I opened it up a found a few things I thought I would share here:

They are no longer using the "Rat LED switching/millennium bypass" set up. It has a 3PDT and the LED is switched strictly off of the switch via making breaking the ground. LED, 1.5K resistor, and 3PDT switch are all that is involved in turning the LED on and off.

Not that it really matters but just to note, the pots are smaller 16mm versus the previous 24mm.

The PCB looks like a mass produced PCB, but has the original component layout seen in non LED Rats and the current Vintage Rat.

So the difference between the current Vintage Rat and Rat 2??? Probably just the LED which is completely isolated from the circuit entirely like most current true bypass boutique pedals.

If anyone has any PCB pics of a current Vintage Reissue Rat I can confirm if they are the identical same PCB.

IC is a TI OP07DP. I'll probably socket it and experiment with different op amps just for kicks.

The pedal sounds pretty good as is, too!

take care,
Robbie

Anyone tried the new Dirty Rat or the Deucetone?  The Deucetone is pretty cool.

I had a Deucetone for a few months, but couldn't get a good sound out of it.  It always sounded kind of muffled, and the tone controls didn't help.  I ended up selling it on ebay...

I don't have those, but I do have photos of a *vintage* Rat 2:

Might be useful for comparison.

Looking at the datasheet of this IC, one can see that the slew rate is quite low, a key factor to the pedal's sound according to GGG (The Rodent Project). It's a lot more expensive than an ordinary TL071.
