Just got this going from my original's photo's and analogguru's drawn out schemo........
OK, I blew up two 308's in the process ( see other mongoose thread ) but
now its working great and sounds "better/Bigger" than the original !!!

Here's a list of "subs" which may have caused this improvement:
1 -  TLO70cp chip ( had no more 308's! )
2 -  the two 2.2uf cans swopped for 4.7uf.... all I had...
3 -  the 39ohm resistor to a 47ohm.... again all I had...
4 -  one of the 2M2 resistors is two 1M in series, close enough ?
5 -  the rest as is, short cables but a "messy" layout !!

Here's the board picture:

Sounds VERY fat and LOUD ! kicks the sh*t out of my amps

REcommended 100%

looks great, im always on the lookout for a fat fuzz

i use the "all i had" method alot in my pedals, its a very good method for experimenting, cos if i had the right values ill probably just use them instead.

IMO, the TL070 is a vast improvement over the 308 for these "ratlike" circuits where you want an externally compensated op amp. It is much quieter and breaks up a lot more smoothly. I A/B'ed them in something I was experimenting with many years ago and I was shocked at how badly the TL070 made the 308 sound. :D

Just my opinon, but I think this is one case where a "modern" (if you can call it that) component beats the "vintage" component.

Thats right Doug, I read Jacks "Rat/Muff" paper, which I bought from AMZ
and that says a similar thing.
When it comes to components, "old" is not always better eh !!
Though in my case ............ :D

Marty a few years ago I had a mongoose fuzz and I remember getting feedback with the volume on two. I can only guess at the huge sustain you are getting now.pl

Marty, have you built either the Jordon Boss Tone, or the Digital Octaver Fuzz? I put both of them in my personal "monster" category, so I was wondering if you've built them to compare to the RM Mongoose. The DOF is a sleeper. So far, Marcos Munkie is the only one I know of that's built it besides me. Once it gets out there among the DIY community and gets built, I think it's gonna become huge. It really surprised me, because it was coming on the heels of the JB build, and IT was so huge, that I wasn't expecting anything else to compare to it, but it also huge, and in the same league with the JB. Tone wise, it's not the same animal of course, but it's just as much a grinder, and will roll the paper off your walls! For some reason, that 4070 chip is real touchy about handling, and I manage to trash two already, so I'll caution you against handling it period, until you're ready to fire it up.

I don't know much of the digital octave fuzz, but I have a Bosstone which
is great but a different "animal" !
The Mongoose's sustain is in "Spinal Tap" league !!..... it will go on for
days and days....
If I get some time today, I'll post a few "Fuzz" clips on arons new mp3
upload area.
I'll mic up my amp with an SM57, as a pre-amp recording wont do them justice !
The amp break up is wonderful :D
4070, I don't have........ I have 4069 and 4066........ ?
