Am I the only one that bemoans the state of spelling and grammar displayed by, not only 'walters', but by others posting on internet forums? Is it *that* hard to think about it and get it right in the first place????!!!! :x    :?

To me, there is often a simple correspondence between the eloquence of the 'speaker', and the quality of the information imparted. Take a look at any of RG's, Mark's (for a couple of good examples) posts, and you'll see what I mean. Yes, non-native English speakers are in a completely different category (and I do admire them) but - for the rest of us (Australians, Americans, Canadians, Brits etc) there isn't any excuse.

/end grumpy old man post...  :D

Why thank you Mike, for allowing me an excuse to post here when it's 4 AM and I've had a gallon ;)
Don't forget there's a lot of non-native English speakers that ARE in a different category than some native speakers. Wether that catergory is better or worse... Guess you have both kinds of people on both sides of the big pond.
For now, I'm just glad I have to worry a little less about being misunderstood ;)

agreed, but the others in this category around here tend to go out of their way to ensure that they are understood. Walters just keeps on posting nonsense with total disregard.

Quite frankly it's offensive and has cast a strange, uneasy feeling over what is normally a very friendly and pleasant place to hang out!

I have been trying to help, but I have my limits. Seems RG is pretty taken aback by it all as well. And that is a terrible thing. RG is the single greatest thing about this place save for Aron and Peter our gracious moderators!

Ummm ... I didn't mean to imply that the English of non-native speakers can't be as good as (or better) as that of native speakers, if that is what you mean (I'm not sure from your post :) ). My post perhaps unfairly quoted 'walters' (although the type of spelling and grammar mistakes he makes are - to me at least - in common with native speakers rather than non-native speakers) .... I guess I've been disappointed in my native-speaking bretheren sometimes, especially when it might possibly be a bad influence on non-native speakers who might wish to improve their English... errm ....

I'll crawl back under my spelling and grammar nazi rock now .... ;)

No, but I think you're the only one who uses the word 'bemoans'  :D

Seriously - and not in anyone's defense, but as an observation - some folks are thinking a million miles a minute. If typing skills are nill, there is quite the tempation to use short speak (don't even bother with punctuation) to try and get the fingers to keep up with the noggin.

cuz if ur ideas r fast, u need 2 b fast 2

I'm not mocking anybody, please don't flame that. But, to prove a point, my forum speak is casual writing - but that came very easily.

Mark Hammer has always good things to say about the peculiarities of forum communication. Maybe he has some idea here. Strange things can happen when someone is trying to convey themselves via the constraints of a keyboard when they would otherwise be speaking.

I for one am all for grammer and puncuation. My English Literature major wife would have it no other way

I take a weekend away from this forum, and I come back to Waltergate. For once, a controversy and Ricky Don isn't responsible!

Hang on - anyone seen RDV recently.....?

RDV

I'm lurking a bit lately cause I haven't been building. I've decided not to touch this walters thing with a ten foot pole.

...and no, I'm not him.
