I've just built a phase 45 using my own layout. And its not working properly. I'm using unmatched mpf102 and 4558's
the guitar signal is going thru the pedal but its distorted and has a tremelo like effect (cuts in and out) the speed of which is can be altered by the speed pot. The amount of guitar that comes thru changes with trim at somes points becoming just very distorted "splats" - but its always distorted.

Any help/ideas????

Thanks

I'm no expert, and haven't built one(yet), but the big guns on this forum seem to agree that you need to match the fets, like described at Geofex...
Check out some free drum loops and other sounds at my site: http://www.christiancoriolis.com

If you have the fets socketed (if you don't you should) then take them both out and you should be getting a clean sound, pretty much just like bypassed sound. If this sound is distorted or there is something wrong, you need to check the circuit up to the first 0.05uF cap.

Make sure you are getting voltage on the right pins, and once you've got the right sound there, you can put in one fet, and tune in the trimpot, and do the trial and error version of matching (search the archives) or use RG's matcher.

goodluck!

The Distortion, my be a short between the two poles of The Zener Diode (mine was distortin too and this was the problem) about the tremolo, I can't Help, but take off the transistors, without them, the sound should be clean, after you make the sound clean, put the transistors again and it should work....

Despite a few dodgy connections the main problem seems have been the transistors. After installing sockets and trying various MPF102s with little success I tried some MPF106/2n5485 and it worked straight away!
I haven't used matched ones yet but I imagine the sound improve when I do get round to matching some. The moral of the story is use sockets and mpf102s are lame!

This is not supposed to work, but I used J201s in mine, and they worked fine...  8)
