Paia Balanced Modulator power question

I've been trying to build up a Paia Balanced Modulator from the instruction manual only.

Jack has the schematic here: http://www.muzique.com/schem/4710.gif

My question is how to hook up the power supply.

It requires +18v (++), +9v (+), ground, and -9v (-)

So the +-9v bipolar supply is easy. The +18v.... is that in reference to ground? I assume that's what it is. So I essentially need two separate power supplies with a common ground?

For a test circuit, can I do it with four 9v batteries?

While I'm at it, I assume I don't have to use a 748 for the op-amp, right? Can I sub a TL071?

You can use three batteries. Two stacked in series for +18, take the +9 from the junction, and the third battery for -9.

Yeah, I'd use a TL07x.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Four batteries would be fine.
ANd that +18 is with respect to earth, yes.
By the way, I havn't built this, but I would use multiturn trimpots for the 50K pots. Or just use ordinary trimpots to see if it works & then if you have difficulty adjusting the nulls, go to the multiturns.
