Really?! That seems very odd to me. A wood enclosure would be a lot easier to damage/break than a heavy duty aluminum enclosure would be, not to mention more difficult to shield...

But, on the other hand, wood is really easy to work with. Maybe that's why he makes them out of wood?  :?

MartyMart

Well, thick Hard-wood is tough stuff and they are made to put in a flight-case for a touring band, so they are only "exposed" on stage.
Perhaps there's just a chunk of alu/steel "lining" inside as a ground, but the major part is wood.
Fabulous "wiring job" eh ?

Marty.

Quote from: Alpha579he talks about an input stage: 'High Impedance Unity Gain Buffer with it's superior RFI  rejecting capability (to eliminate Radio Station interference) and Low Impedance Audio output'...what could that be?

i use something similar to this inside my guitar(pre guitar volume) and just cloned it and put it in a pedal(for post guitar volume).most guitar pickups have a high impedance output making the signal level taper off with the length of your cables. a unity gain buffer preamp brings the signal to unity gain and changes the impedance to low z. allowing for a lot of cable length with no signal loss. a great tool if you use it as an effects loop where a lot of cables may be needed ala` jerry garcia and myself and apparently dave gilmour(don't know if he uses as an effects loop). put inside the guitar will allow the guitar to shape the sound with the tone controls better thru any effect because it is wired pre volume. it really does make a difference compared to going the traditional way of daisy chain then amp. the onboard effects loop also allows me to have a switch on my guitar to go from either clean guitar to effected guitar. i am pretty sure that dave gilmour uses something similar for the same purpose. hope this helps. here are some links for my sources:

any chance of a schematic?  : :)

MartyMart-

Yes, the layout, wiring and workmanship is very nice. I guess if the box is going into a flight case and the momentary switches are easy to activate, then a wood enclosure would work fine. It wouldn't be my first choice, though...

Heavy grade plywood actually withstands accidents much better than metal of the same weight. And for a DIY one-off, it is much easier to work with. Sure, it is possible to gouge a chunk out of plywood, but similar force applied to a metal case will give a 'ding', and you know how impossible it is to get THAT out :x

Paul Marossy

Well, that's a good point Mr. Perry. That's true, 1/2" or 3/4" plywood can be darn tough stuff! You learn something new every day.  8)

Conductive paint on the inside of the wood enclosure makes sense, but I wouldn't necessarily call that "superior RFI rejection" technology. But hey, if it works, it works.  8)

In looking at some of Pete's newer pedalboards, it looks like the footswitch uses a machined aluminum knob for the actuator - note the set-screw holes.

For the buffered fx business read the 4th paragraph on this page.

As for wood remember that a wooden cab is easier to repair should some disaster befall it, and could be carried out in even the most remote town.

The repair of a metal case would mean a return to Mr Cornish, or a lot of effort finding a metal shop nearby that will do the job there and then.

His pedal boards are really beautiful!  (What kind of foot switches are those????)

They look like Arrow DPDTs, sadly no longer made.

for the most part, all he is doing is reboxing boss effects into his own heavy duty boxes...and is making a killing doing it....

With all that signal wiring you'd think it would add a bit of noise??
