HI

Im building the BSIAB2 and i ran short of 2n5457s. I only have two of them, but I need 3. Can I use a 2n5458 instead?, Maybe a j201??
Really don't mind if you sit this one out...

J201's will work... you should experiment with the different jfets in that one anyway it seems.  2n5457, j201, mpf102

A 2N5458 will be much closer than a J201. I would try that first.

In other circuits - generally Yes,  just used them in the Phase 45, which calls for 5458's.
As far as the BSIAB goes, as suggested J201 is a better option.

I have built six BSIAB2, two for myself and four for my friends, all of them have 2N5458 since I couldn't get 2N5457. Two of the BSIAB2 that I have built for my friends has four 2N5458s since they wanted less compression and lower gain. For the output stage I use a J202.

Check the datasheet. The main difference between the two is Gate-Source Voltage, Cutoff Voltage, Zero-Gate Voltage Drain Current and Forward Transfer Admittance/Conductance. It means that 2N5458 has a higher operating voltage and it can have a higher output than 2N5457 and a 2N5458 has a higher gain factor. It is the same between J201 and J202.

It is up to you, experiment, use sockets for the transistors and try it first.
