I can't believe that this (now off-topic) thread has run to three pages on the basis of dissing a unarguably legendary guitarist like Brian May and raising once again the unexplainable topic of what some people are prepared to pay for a guitar pedal. Duh.

Get a life, everyone.

Okay, I apologize for the last statement to those with thin skins.

Yeah, I guess that train got derailed...

I still remember when those classic Queen songs came out when I was about 12 or so in the late 70s. Brain May sure did have some great sounds.

Who said that again?  ...yeah right, it was this guy Brian May who said that. Great guitar player, by the way, and a big influence on me. Like Greg Ginn, too, a little later in my life...

Personally however, I do find the pursuit of someone else's sound with such seemingly deadly accuracy to be a fairly lame exercise. But I guess that's okay if your dream is  to be in a tribute band, as someone else mentioned.

Ceasar Diaz spent years doing this for SRV.  :)

Actually, he gave SRV his tone:

That is also my understanding.

I was somewhat jokingly referring to the tonequest Report interview:

Quote from: Tonequest Report Cesar Diaz Interview

I had done a lot of rewinding and testing of the Stratocaster pickups from that era, because my whole thing was, “How did Jimi Hendrix get his tone?” That’s how I got anywhere â€" helping people get that tone, and it was definitely Stevie Ray’s thing, getting Jimi’s tone.

IMO, Stevie sounded like Stevie, and Jimi sounded like Jimi. It was 2 different sounds, to my ears. There were some similarities but it struck me that a lot of that was because they shared some playing techniques.

Also, I think there is a difference between asking, "How did that guy get that sound?", vs. saying, "I'm not going to rest until I have duplicated that sound 100%". (Unless you're in a tribute band, of course.) One is more of a learning experience whereas the other is an attempt to create a facsimile.
