Rangemaster "Boost" Pot Taper

Has anyone else noticed that when using a 10K audio taper pot for the Rangemaster's "Boost" control, almost all of the boost range it cramped up in the last 25% of the pot's rotation?

I'm thinking that a 10K linear taper pot would help the situation, but it might be too abrupt.  Anyone try a linear taper pot?

RK, if you read this and don't mind telling, is the Java Boost using an audio or linear taper pot?

Thanks!

Sounds exactly like what you need....lin 10k.  I suppose you could put a 5k resistor in parallel also.

You actually use it NOT cranked up full all the time?!?!?!?! :)

Haha...well you got me there ;)  I do usually leave if fairly cranked.  I added a 3-position switch for input capacitor selection and a tone control like in the Java...pretty good mods to the circuit.  I also built it as a solid NPN circuit with a 2N388 transistor.

I'll temporarily drop the 10KB pot in and report on it's function (if I have any left, that is).

As expected, the the 10K linear taper pot makes a MUCH better "boost" control in Rangemaster circuits than the audio taper.  The boost range is much more evenly spread over the pot's rotation...no more bunching at the end.

Ha Ha !
I made one last week............. with a 10k linear pot AND ... a NPN OC140!!!  ( CV7112 actually, but same thing )
Sounds fantastic BTW !
I seem to prefer "linear" in a lot of builds, just bought 15 100k lins for
output volume use .. :D

Try a 20k pot in this and you will laugh out loud!!!

I can't remember, but I think I must have used a 10k linear taper in mine. The taper is fine, works great. Matter of fact, I'm really surprised how much I use different settings of it. It covers quite a wide range of gain.  I like the lower settings (around 50% and less) for bluesy "hideaway-like" sounds. 75% and up for gainier sounds. This is currently probably my favorite pedal.

I like what I've been reading in this thread.  I may have to try a linear pot in my Marsha Valve just for kicks.  I haven't really done anything with linear pots so I don't know how it will behave versus log.
