This belongs to a friend who wanted me to have a look at it. The AC jacks nut had come off and the jack was inside the pedal bouncing all around and likely shorting something out. I mounted the AC jack and checked it out to find that it worked fine but, in by pass mode, the status light remains on but only slightly dimmer than when the pedal is engaged.
Is it  possible the switching chip is partially damaged?
Thanks,

it is possible, but it would seem no one has encountered this judging by the lack of responses. Perhaps if you gave the model number then someone might dig up a schematic for you and you could go from there.

You're right about that mate. Details would've gotten me further I'm sure.
I did some closer examinig and discovered the LED is connected to a  2N5088 tranny which is controlled by the switching chip. My guess is it's pooched. I went to my local and bought a bag of 5 for a buck. I'll swap it out and see what happens. How's the weather down under?

where I'm at it's cold, but not as cold as it gets up your way! Looks like more rain on the way which we desperately need. Just hope it's falling in the right places!

I swapped the tranny last night and presto!, problem solved. BTW, 30 degrees celcius today and a high of 34 tomorrow.
