MUFF FUZZ

Hello Hello-
    Just threw together a transistor Muff Fuzz and was wondering what other peoples experience has been with it.  Seems to be a "medium gain" fuzz....not really as much fuzz as a stock Fuzz Face.

I'd say that's about right. I have a '70's era Muff Fuzz and that pretty much describes it.

Hello, Hello Brian....
I made a "Muff Fuzz" quite a while ago and I really like the "tone"  
I used a pair of 5089's and If I remember the build, its all "stock`'
I have it in a small "sweet tin" - just a volume control, gtr input varies
the amount of "Fuzz" but it doesn't totally clean up .....
2 X 0.1uf orange drop caps 1 X 47uf electro
It sounds to me like a "slightly" toned down big muff - and pretty much
as good IMHO  !

yeah i built a couple a while back.  I had problems with the signal gating off as notes decayed so i threw a single transistor boost stage in front of it and played with the diodes and chip types so it didn't fart out.  It sounded really good, but still sorta harsh.  It's on loan at a local studio so people do use it i guess (i really wasn't) but after all i did to it i thought it sounded pretty good for what it was.

i built one. i liked it, it was sorta only good for one type of sound tho. i put an orange squeezer in front of it, and it REALLY livened up. give that a try.

   Hhmmmm.......I  thought that the Muff Fuzz would be more like a Fuzz Face with diodes but it's a lot tamer sounding.........not as much fuzz or gain.  Actually I took the diodes out of the circuit and to me it sounds better!

I think we are talking about two different circuits ... !
I DONT mean the "ic" based one , I mean the two trannies three caps and
four resistor one ......  from Torchy's fisrt batch I think ... ?

    The one I'm talking about is tha two-transistor circuit.
I did use a BC182 for Q1 and I'm wondering if that didn't knock the gain down a bit...........

I have two 2n5089's in mine, both quite high hfe- 580 and 670 ....
Sounds great to me !   BTW I just popped them in, with no real testing

   HI Marty!
   Hmmmm...... maybe I just need to put a high-gain tranny in Q1.   The BC182 that I have in there now is around 200hfe so maybe the front end just needs more "ooommphh".

I build one pretty much like martymarts 2n5089's no testing on them.   I really like the circuit, nice tone, cleans up on volume, but like marty said not all the way.  It was my first build and I really liked it not over the top just a nice little fuzz.

here is one that i bulit recently for a friend .... just boost the input whatever way you want ... but not too much tho.... then a nice big fuff tone stack just before the out put....smokin !!
I did get some help as i have in hand the original vintage EH fuzz wah with the fuzz being ....walla.. the muff fuzz. There are some additional components on it and it does make a differance. Like there is ceramic 104 between IC foot 3 and 4 before ground ... then there is a another one after the 10K resistor from ic foot 6 to 2 ... i think thats it... !! Try differant input caps .. .068 or .1 maybe ... try and see what you like. I even tried switching the clipping stage with output boost ... there is a differance. Try 1458 then try 4558 or maybe TL072 ... there IS a differance ...! Nice fat fuzz... .  good for solos. Just wing it !!
