Hello - I'm thinking of building a power amp for POD and the like and I was wondering what kind of speaker or speakers, should I use ? - a guitar speaker, bass guitar speaker? general purpose? PA speaker, Hi-Fi speaker, or may be some combos?

What will let the most out of the amp simulators

P.S - I'm thinking of using two LM3886 chips to get clean 100W and a low gain tube stage for "warmth" - what do you think?

Maybe check the specs for that Atomic Reactor (Or whatever the modular tube amp is for the emulators) to see what speakers it uses?

Since the POD can simulate the speaker response also, maybe a good "Clean" speaker. Zakk Wylde uses something like 200 watt EVs (not sure on the brand) in his 4x12s instead of the standard rock Celestions, etc, because it reproduces his amp sound better (to him anyway).

Or if you like celestions or whichever, leave the speaker sim off and go it the old fashion way....Or combine them - YOUR ears will tell you.

Total judgement call unfortunately - Good luck on the project.

Eminence has a speaker, 12" Legend Modelling 120 watts, maybe it is worth checking where available at reasonable cost

I have few cheap 10" PA speakers, which I might try some day

If I was using a POD, I would use PA type speakers. Full range ones like the Yamaha 312 series.

I'm using a barcus berry acoustic amp with a 15" or an 18" ev speaker.
Sounds really good compared to using regular guitar amp speakers.
Definitely go for pa speakers.

I'm doing the pod thing now with some 12 pa speakers.  I'm pushing 250 watts a side and am finding that you really need clean and efficient speakers to get LOUD. Those EV are a great idea but I heard ev doesn't  make the 12L anymore. Eminence makes the Delta 12 PRO which is a clone of the EV. Very efficient and flatter than the modeling speaker handles up to 400 watts 99db and Avatar will sell a pair for 159. I ordered 2 to replace the pioneers (95 db) that are in my pa cabs. Also the guys on the line6 board and the institute of noise line6 pod board swear by post eq on the POD before a power-amp. I'm using the parametric eq from an old feedback exterminator to flatten out the cab. If I was still using my 4X12 I would just turn off the speaker sim but I'm trying to lighten my load to save my back. There's an interesting table on the Klipsh site that goes into speaker eff vs power = output db. For every 3db in efficiency you can use 1\2 the power (Watts) for the same sound output..
