jmusser-

I think this is something like puretube is talking about:

This is a circuit that I designed that sounded killer, but had way too much noise to be useable.

If you drive inverters with a sine you'll see the tops gradually compress and square off as you increase either the amplitude of the wave or increase the amp's gain. If you drive these circuit really hard you get the type of waveform Paul posted (the 'corners' tend to be rounder at lower gains).

The distortion that these types of circuit produce is very reminiscent of tube amp overdrive, though the methods of producing it are different. The gain craps out as the output signal approaches the rails and you get a subtle compression of the signal rather than abruptly splicing the tops off, which is what diodes tend to do.

Thanks Paul! That's pretty much what I would have expected, with the rounded off corners, and nothing really radical going on with the overall waveform. Nice, sweet, and TUBY!

Quote from: Mark HammerI'm lucky enough to have a small Leslie, and let me tell you that a 4049-based overdrive through a slow Leslie is simply one of the great rhythm guitar sounds for "classic" rock.  If you like the way that rhythm guitar sounds in Tom Petty's recordings, you'll love this.  Fuzzed up, I 'm not a major fan, but if you're aiming for bite and just a bit of grind and stridency, this does a very nice job.

mark , why'd you have to mention tom 'petty', now you phucked this hole thread up for me :P , i really hate'm though.
peter frampton [sp?] is a much cooler example.

Oh, Tom, Tom, Tom.

Okay, we'll try a different tact.  4049-based overdrive is the sort of thing that makes a Les Paul Jr. sound like the best guitar on earth.  If your goal in life is to sound a little more like Leslie West, this will help you get there. There.  Is that a little less painful now?
