led and Cds sells covered in electrical tape?

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking about building the Phaseur Fleur from the commonsund kits page. But there is one thing I don't quite understand, and I hoped you could help me with this:

In the first Pdf file on there it says the led and Cds sells should be covered with elctrical tape to make it light tight but why? On one of the tweaking guide files it says that you should watch how the leds blink, but how should I be able to this if the whole thing is covered with tape?(I know I could move the tape;) but wouldn't this ruin the whole plan of it being light tight?

Next thing, What are the leds doing inside of the pedal? When they are light led shouldn't I be able to see them? What function does they have?

Thanks

Bernardduur

The LEDS and the CDS should be covered because the CDS "sees" the LED and when they are not taped in light from the room will interfere with the unit.

I once made my first tremolo, the tremolo lune and that thing did not work; it was so weird, at night it worked, the next day I did not get any good tone out of it.

I did not cover the LED and CDS.......... Stupid me.

The LED in the unit produces a signal that will alter the input signal; using LEDS and CDS' makes the circuit a bit easier than to alter the input signal on the fly.

Okay thanks alot.
I just couldn't figure out why it should be covered in tape.

Does anybody know where I can get the CdS sells and rectangel leds I need for this project? If you know anywhere in europe let me know. Thanks

Hmmm, next door to my house stocks them, but he is a small time shop so he does not ship....

corbs

you could use a regular led and use heatshrink to hold them together?

Could I use a regular round led instead of the rectangel ones? Will it chance the sound?

BigTexas

yeah you can use regular led's but youre better off sanding or cutting the top down flat so you can sandwich the cds/photocell against it... then spot it with a little hot glue and wrap it in black electrical tape.

Should I just sand the top? Not the sides?
On the site they also talk about sandwiching them togheter, but I wasn't really sure what they meant by that.
So they aren't gonna sit tight to the pcb board.

Also if you have made this pedal. Do you have a picture of the pcb layout(without parts) you could send to me? Im to lazy to erase the wires from the picture.

That's what I did when I made my Tremulus Lune...just used a regular LED and heatshrink.

See the black tube-looking thing towards the right side of the picture? That's my LED + heatshrink.

Now I don't know if the tremulus lune needs a rectangel led, but does it matter what shape it is?

What size or heatshrink did you use? and did you just glue the led and CdS sells together?

I don't think it really matters what the shape is. I think the square ones are easy because you can lay them flat against the photocell and tape them easier.

I can't quite recall what size the heatshrink was...I think I just got the variety pack from Radio Shack and used whatever size fit.

I didn't use any glue. Just put it so the "head" of the LED was touching the face of the photocell (since most of the light comes out of the top of the LED) and put the heatshrink around them. Blew on it with a hairdrier and the heatshrink held them in place nicely...no glue needed.

Very easy!

Okay thanks Im gonna try that when I get my parts.
