..two circuits..one old and familiar and one new..a very simple "vari-mu" tube compressor I worked on the last couple of weeks...

..enjoy..

COOL !!!
I bet that works great !!
Peter Snowberg is trying to help me [Thanks PS] get a somewhat similar starved Jfet Mu schematic up, I'm entheused, it has a very nice interesting [ I find useful] compression/soft distortion quality to it.
I don't like to ask for [because I don't like to go to the trouble of] a soundclip very often....but for the sight of your 'worthy of' Looking tube schematic I'll make an exception 8)

Your using a 12ax7 ?
I have those and sockets for here...all I need is to figure out the 100v supply...not today though...

sorry..no soundclips yet..
yes, I used a 12ax7, but it would probably work with a lot of different tubes, perhaps even with the low-voltage tubes that some people have been experimenting with..

just added a niosegate idea too...
havnt testet that one yet, but think it will work..

what are the 2 variable resistors for?

the 5k and the 470k...and why do they have question marks by them?

also- will 120 volts work?

what are the diodes?

100k (bottom one) a volume pot?

and what is the top 100k variable res. for?

thanks for your time....im asking all of these questions, because i would like to build this circuit.

the 5k and 470k is for seting attack and releasetimes, you can use trimpots, regular  through chassis pots or just select resistors if you want. the questionmark is just there becouse everybody might prefere different timesetings for attack and release...( am currently running with 1k and 100k..)

the diods are a voltage doubler creating a negative bias for the grid. this is what varies the "mu" or "gain" of the circuit..sort of a VCA type amp

the 100k is just to set the "bias" if you will, for the circuit...it will be different for different tubes and different voltages ( especially when running close to starved plate ), but seting it so that the voltage on the Anode is roughly half the B+ will get you best responce

the 100k pots on the bottom is just threshold and output volum...
