hi,

i was going to pick up a toaster oven today at the flea market,(just threw mine out   ) but none of them had temperature readings.  How do you tell if you box isn't set on too high a temp, when all the toaster oven says is high medium low, etc...

thanks

I guess any toaster oven that is clean will do, but any additional features that are good? <<<<<<<<< Dumb Question Here

I'm assuming this is with reference to solder re-flow technique on DIY surface mount circuits?

Your constraints are the following:
Enough heat to melt the solder < oven heat < maximum prolonged temperature rating on your IC's
(< means "less than", in the event it erroneously was read as some form of punctuation)

You probably need to get a cheap thermometer that can take the heat of the oven and find out what its temperature is at the 3 settings.  Find out which setting(s) regulate the toaster oven temp within the above constraints and you're golden.

It's better to operate it at a temperature closer to the cool end of the range than to challenge the absolute maximum rating on the components you're soldering.

I hope that helps--take care  8)

i never heard of doing that,
i meant for baking boxes though you still gave me an answer.
thanks man

I've owned a few toaster ovens and they all had a knob with temperature settings printed around it - can't say how accurate they really were though.
You probably want to use the lowest setting. Most of the ovens I see start at around 180-200 degrees farenheit.

It is possible to get multimeters with temperature probes, maybe that would work. Also I have seen (but never used) oven therometers with a dial (worked on a bimetallic strip principle).
Ah, 37,000 hits for 'oven thermometer' in google.. I'll shut up now.

Quote from: formerMember1yeah thanks, i posted in that thread, :D

Oops! I was taking for granted my conclusions from that thread that baking was a waste of time. I am pretty bad with remembering names as well. I once raised the issue of avatars to make it easier to associate a *face* with a name, but it wasn't very popular.
