I'm thinking about trying one or more of these...not sure what else it takes though...
I've been wanting a small tube amp. 12ax7's and 6l6, also el34's I have, but I'll probably end up using different output tubes:
Basically I'd like to see what a schematic looks like with one of the EH tranformers sported...or just an 'I'ts easy'...[with brief explanation].

Are you talking about the toroidal one aron sells?

petemoore

That'd be the one ~~~lll~~~

You could use it for any amp that needs 230vac really. The only problem is...I dont see heater taps. You would need 6.3vAC taps for the heaters, and the taps would have to have enough amps to power a few tubes. Which amp were you thinking about building? Also if you built an amp that had a tube rectifier you would need another different set of 6.3vac taps for that. From what I see...it doesnt have any taps for heaters, but maybe aron or someone else could chime in and tell us if it does. Power transformers are relatively expensive usually. My P1 transformer costed around 30 dollars, and the one for my 36 watt Im building will cost $80, so this one for $15 tells me its lacking something...probably not good for a tube amp. I think EH used them to power their 12ax7s in their pedals, but I think its missing some stuff for amps.

Once again...Im not an expert...I might be 100% wrong. lol

For the heaters, I think I can cajole a wall wart to supply the necessary power, worked last times I tried...I'm not worried about space/weight, yet.
I was just wondering about connecting the transformer directly to power the tubes, or if there's a PS Section I should be thinking about...diode bridges, caps, etc.

You will need filtering of course. Filament hum reduction resistors. Theres a lot to think about when it comes to amps. What did you have in mind?

petemoore

what I did have in mind was 100w Plexi, had that too loud thing going on.
Then I have a 50w MkII, which is about perfect for medium clubs to outdoors, still basically too big for my bedroom, and maybe bigger than what I'd like to use for club use...course I wouldn't really know other than the seeing and reading about of a
18w amp, say driving 2 speakers. But as you may tell already I don't know...
so...for now I want a simple project that'll gain up and sound clean depending on stompboxes.
I have N/P sticking with 12ax7 pre end because I know what that is sound and otherwise, for the most part, I've a Shaka Tube [36v] and a Vox Pre [290v tapped off an output amp, but the Vox tube oscillates] cloned.
What I *don't have and would like is a JTM45 type sound.
Also what I don't have is a tube amp that likes being cranked and doesn't rumble the house to get in '1rst gear', voicing of a big amp but small amp.
 I'm already down to 2w-10w I think.
A front end that can be clean and likes getting hammered, and an output section that likes to being under load...so I can go from warm/pristine to FF.
I'm less worried about is Dual Recto type tone...
Nice to aggressive tones for recording at bedroom levels is I guess what I've narrowed it down to [for today...lol].
I'm pleased with the front end of JTM45 and MkII, Normal and Bright inputs are easy to dial...they both have treble, middle, bass, and presence, input 1 vol. and input 2 vol.
2 inputs is plenty and I could probably get by with slightly less 'knobbage'...[for instance without Mid or presence knob, preset instead].
Unless I can figure out what I'm doing better, I should probably start with a kit.
The "Beginner Forum' is a great resource for newb stompboxers, I've seen how somebody goes in there and comes out with a nice unit and lots of know how and what knots to do, for getting into tube amps//I haven't seen anything like that, seems like it would be a good thing.

www.ax84.com is good
www.18watt.com if you want an 18 watter.

You can always mix and match preamps. I think the best for you would be the P1 at www.ax84.com. It runs around 7 watts, which is fairly loud. It would be good for recording. Its a single ended output tube, so its fairly simple to build and a transformer set for it only costs 60 bucks or so from mouser and it uses no choke. Its solid state rectified so you wont need a second set of taps for a tube. However you wont be able to use arons toroidal transformer because it only uses 190vAC.

You might try the november at ax84.com It requires 275VAC primaries.

The 18 watt requires 300 volts at the secondaries. That is pretty good.

I recommend the 18watt. Its an easy amp, plus you can buy all the parts you need online. You can get prebuild boards, chasis, transformer sets, cabinets yeah everything. I think Ceriatone.com is a good resource however Nik isnt answering emails right now. There are many variations on the 18 watt's preamp. There is the TMB which is treble, mid, and bass. This variation gives plenty of control over tone. There is also a tremolo version of the preamp. So I would start there. However this amp uses its own taps for the rectifier. I really doubt you will be able to use arons toroidal for any of these amps.
