A bit OT: Horizontal tubes

Im building a new amp and I might have to make some of the tubes horizontal. Does this cause any problems with noise? Does it only do it to certain types of tubes? (pentodes vs triodes or rectifiers)

I built a Soldano X88R clone with 6 12AX7 tubes mounted horizontally, and I have had not noted any problems with that.
Some Mesa's have triodes and pentodes mounted horizontally too.

Alright cool. Anyone else have any advice in this situation? Im trying to get any and all experiences with this that I can.

*Don't place the preamp tubes right next to the PT.
*Don't run the mains cable back and forth all over the chassis internals.
*Don't hang the tubes upside down without retainers.
*A light bulb is NOT an electronic tube.
*Umm... Don't attach the loudspeaker right on the chassis.

That's about it.

care to explain?  :)

JimRayden

It's a monode, so it won't have any use as a gain stage nor a rectifier. :)

Tubes have these great datasheets that tell you what position the tube can be mounted in.

Some tubes may only be mounted vertically, and others horizontally only in certain rotations. The datasheets tell you this.

Due to the ***extreme*** compression of tube types down to essentially one preamp tube (12AX7) and a few output tubes, the ones we have left are largely the non-position-sensitive ones.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Darwin predicted it for living beings, curious it happened for tubes too.

Gee, I really miss those 6414s...
I'm Elmore James, bitch!

You could also base the layout on a tweed style tube amp layout, just sideways :)

Yeah I would except Im ordering a premade cabinet for the chasis. The chasis is top mounted. This is what it will look like

And since my build has two more tubes, I was either going to smash them all together or put some on the big flat part of the chasis, but when the chasis would be mounted in the amp that would make the tubes horizontal.

Regan

That should  be cool, I have seen amps with tubes mounted on both areas, I think even vox had amps like that.
