Hi!
I'm been wandering here for a month and owned a electric guitar for under a month.

I've been thru many schematics and articles, for looking cool distortions.
I understand how op-amp and transistor based distortions work, but...
How the heck to the logic chip ones work? I looked at the 4049 datasheet a I saw some diodes and mosfets. Well?
I know how they work in digital circuits (the invert and buffer, lol :))

I searched the forum for info about  them, but to no avail...

I know some electronics, I've been lurking around in electronics forum about a 2 years (I'm 15 :P ) and built some litlle thingies.

can somebody please explain?

Thanks!
Egert

free information sucks...

scratch

Get your hands on Electronic Projects for Musicians by Craig Anderton. He has one of those in there with excellant technical descriptions of how they work. With the 4049 they are 'coaxed'/ biased to operate in the linear (read analog) region instead of operating either on or off (digital) ... Note you can't do this with other 'digital' chips like gates, counters, flip/flops, etc.

Have fun ...

..for whatever it might be worth...
a few months ago I built a very simple circuit that turned everything above a certain signalstrength into a square wave, using little more than a transistor ( for pregain ) and a 74HC14 ( schmittrigger )..with the way a scmittrigger works it even act as a noisegate for itself... ..any obvious name?...Mr.Schmitt..who else..

Like Scratch says, it's on his "Tube Sound Fuzz" in that book. He puts it in easy to understand terms. If you don't have access to one, E Mail me, and I'll scan it for you. Thanks Puretube for that data sheet.

like I mentioned in a different thread recently...

(1 of the few threads I recall, asking a question in the forum   )
