Hi guys, just wondering if anyone can suggest a replacement for this chip that is quieter.  I have a handy little headphone amp I made a while back based on the 386, but it really hisses.

Just thought I'd ask before I go trying a different circuit.

cheers.

Are you sure it is the LM386?

The LM386 is just a power amp and would amplify any noise already present in the signal.

JRC386D is supposed to be less noisy. Try running the circuit on 12v, should give you a cleaner signal with less noise (make sure all the components are rated for 12v).
