I just tried out the new Ampeg Scrambler reissue.

It sounded very cool for a new, mass produced fuzz box (I can't think of too many other major companies offering something like it) but my real complaint is that it just seemed small and not quite as gargantuan as any clone of it that I have built. I seem to recall the ONE time I got to play a real one back in 1988 that it was huge sounding.

The modern one has the same blend of controls (texture all the way counterclockwise is a normal fuzzy tone, all the way up and you get that raspy octave that we all know and love). I just felt that it sounded a little thinner and less muscular than any of my clones.

Did they pick specifically low-gain transistors for this reissue? I wonder.

The case is nice and heavy, though in 2005, they might as well have put an LED on the damned thing, eh?

I read a review from analogman.com and they seemed to give it a pretty decent review.  http://www.analogman.com/scramblr.htm

QuoteUpon testing, we were amazed as the reissue had more output volume than the original, with the same awesome fuzzy sound with upper octave. And we think the tone of the reissue is even better - thicker and stronger

I wonder if there is any differences between them- you know- some variations in sound based on components?
