wiring a stereo input jack without battery

I built a BSIAB2 but opted not to use a battery lead even though I used a stereo input jack.  Does the ring need to be be connected to anything in absence of the neg battery lead (perhaps grounded to the sleeve)?

Supplying power directly to the circuit...you will have no use [afaiksee] for the ring connection of the St input jack.
