I will just have to try this...

I think he hit on one of the easiest ways I can imagine to implement a homemade leslie effect for guitar. Make the cab separate from your existing spkr cab and just park it in front when you want to use it. Direct drive a drum with a ceiling fan motor (mount the motor in front)- vertical dispersion like a vibratone cab, not horizontal like a leslie. Use a relay to control the 3 speed motor (replace the pull-chain switch).

For "grinding" organ sounds try a crossover network with 2 cabs, slightly different speeds (controlled by drum weight or use medium and high speeds together?) and use the reversing switch on one. For horizontal dispersion, stack the speaker/"leslie" cabs vertically, make sandwich, etc... Lots of possibilites here, I think.

Better get to replacing that ceiling fan my wife's been talking to me about...

Oh man... ;)

What's cool about this is it seems like it would be mostly a fairly simple woodworking project. I'm guessing you could make a wooden drum with 2 disks mounted on ea end of a box that has  a slot in one side. Just need to use lightweight wood. You could mount the motor on the inside of the front baffle in "ceiling hugger configuration". Also, this guy at the vibratone site has a good idea about using a "vane":

(Scroll down to the "one rotor phasing trick" near the bottom.)

I'll have to figure out how to wire up the relay in place of the 3-way switch. Shouldn't be too difficult. I'd try it with the chain at first anyway, just to make sure the basic principle works.

Sounds like a cool recording trick. Not sure how practical it would be to gig with, not that a leslie is very practical to gig with! And I do have an unused ceiling fan in the basement...
