In the description for the "whisker biscuit" on ROG it says "cleans up pretty well with the guitar volume knob" - is that why it doesn't have a 'drive' pot? Could one be put on the gate to ground for the darlington?

Whoops...after reread...gain pot can be put here, there, and where you suggested looks a good spot to try one.
Pregain like Pregain...signal in from input [33k couuld probably be lost], into lug 1? signal to circuit from lug 2, lug 3? to ground.
Reverse lugs 1 and 3 if the knob increases gain CCW.
I think lug 1 is on the right, looking at the pot shaft pointing at you, lugs across the top.
...basically turn the pot down, hook ground to the lug on that side.
Alternatively the gain pot could be spliced after Q1, between the 10k and .1uf [SP through lugs 1 and 2, lug 3 to ground]. You might want to eliminate the 10k...maybe put a smallish resistor between lug 3 and ground.
Also if you're using a large pot to do the dividing [as a gain pot], adding a small cap across lugs 1 and 2 lets highs pass the high resistance through the pot...might have too many highs already though...
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

One of the main reasons why the WB doesn't have a gain control is that it has a nice, buzzy hi-gain sound that doesn't improve much with lower gain settings.  IMO it works best with a Darlington with hFE of about 30,000 - 40,000 in there (e.g. MPSA13).
