Interview with Sergio Dias on Mixing it last night, plus a session.  I would have posted this in the lounge but he talks at length about how they achieved some of the effects on their recordings - sewing machines, fly-sprays, headphone leslies, woo-woo pedals - so it's inspiring stuff.

This outfit pretty much passed me by, but it's interesting listening even if you don't know anything about the group.

The interview kicks off around the 23 minute mark and the effects stuff around the 28 minute mark.

The start of the program is at around 2mins 20 if your ears are receptive to new music...

Yeah, they got strange ways to make their sounds. All of this was idea of his brother Cláudio, the one that published a few articles with schematics. Cláudio is a genius. Sérgio said lots of times that he created some effects for the Mutantes that the big companies of effects still didn't discovered how to create. Also, in the "gold guitar" that he plays, there's a few secrets in it. It have common pickups, hex pickups, a fuzz for each string, plus a secret pickup created by Cláudio. Also he built the entire Mutantes' sound equipment (amps, mixers and everything). Today Cláudio write books, and he can be easily contacted in his e-mail, but he doesn't talk about electronics anymore. Unfortunally, he got a disease in his hands and can't hold a soldering iron anymore.

I think the 'secret pickup' was mentioned in the interview.  It's a record player cartridge in the bridge to get an acoustic sound (pizo type thing).  His brother sounds like a genius, he was doing talk box, vocal wah, hex pickups etc long before the big boys cottoned onto them.
