Germanium tranny?

I was wondering whether or not germanium mesa transistors for switching, could be used in fuzz faces, etc. I'm not familiar with what's special about a Mesa type. I believe this would be like an NTE126 device.

  Fuzz Face as a component testing circuit.
  Because I'm familiar with what one sounds like and the biasing of the transistors, and what 'x' size input cap will sound like, I use it sometimes to test components.

I don't actually have these in my posession, I'm just thinking about buying some NOS ones off Ebay, so that's why I'm wondering.
