I know it's not a stompbox, but I think someone on here can help. The shaft on what looks like a potentiometer broke on my korg electribe. It was the selector pot for the effects. It's labeled 'B10k' and that's it. The thing that makes it different from a regular pot is that it has a detented ring around the top that allows it to 'click' into 12 different positions. I've looked through my billion-page mouser catalog for a replacement but have come up empty. I suppose it could be an encoder, but the encoders in mouser look different, this part looks exactly like a normal pot (has normal wiper internals, and 3 pcb lugs, i took it apart.) Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I'd love to get back to making some techno beats!
Thanks,
Lowell

Throw it out and go buy an aerosmith record, or pantera, or even guns and roses. Get a clue.  The pot is most likely a 10k linear pot. The clicks are probably just ball bearing stops. Try putting a regular pot on and see what happens. -ph

"B10K" would indicate a 10K linear pot. Does the back of he pot have any indentations or holes in it? I have used some pots made by CalRad Electronics that have multiple positions such as you describe. I got them at my local electronics store, which is called Kiesub Electronics.

The closest thing I can find is the 10-position ratchet style pots here: http://www.arcade-electronics.com/calrad/calradcatalog/calrad%20digital%20catalog/25%20Series.pdf
They are available here: http://www.arcade-electronics.com/calrad/calrad.htm

Uh, yeah i know it's a 10k linear. And no, there are no ball bearings, it has a DETENTED top casing that interacts with a ring on the shaft to click into position. But thanks for being a smartass. RIP dimebag...

Sounds very much like an Alps pot with detent (detent is the secret tech work for "it goes click click click").
Alps make a LOT of stuff, but often it is in minimum quanties of several thousand. Searching wihtthe word DETENT might help, or who knows, maybe Korg will sell you a spare! they are usually pretty OK, or approach the local accredited repair guy for Korg.

The ratcheted one I suggested would work fine. I bet it's a lot easier to find and a lot more obtainable than the Alps pot.  :icon_wink:

Mouser has those pots.  They are ALPHA Miniature page 451 of catalogue 621.
These have 11 dentent positions.  mouser part no. 313-3000-value(ex: 1k,10k,etc...) $1.74 each

Peace!

Thanks for that Arn C, I can see an application , if the detents are indeed accurate, it means I can use one of these pots as a digital switch, by passing the output to a crude A to D converter (yeah, I know I should use a rotary encoder, but there is going to be a bit of other stuff going on!!)
