I thought I'd throw together this circuit before I went to work today. I used a 2N3904 fr Q1 and 2N3906 for Q2. It doesn't sound too bad, but nothing to wrtite home about. The tone control goes from mud to broken glass. About half of the tone control sweep on the 50K pot, does nothing much but make noise, and the effect pretty much die out. So, you have a 1/4 works for bass, 1/2 dead and noisy, and the last 1/4 for treble. The treble portion reminds me quite a bit of the Sola Sound 3 knob, with the tone all the way up, and the fuzz all the way up. It's thin and cheezy, but fairly well defined. The bass end is mushy and dull. The sustain is not that great either, but at least it's not gatey, and tails off naturally. I haven't read up on previous builds of this circuit to know if there is anything that will make it better. I did try a couple different transistors, but it didn't make much difference
