I apologize for starting up a topic about a pedal that has been debated so emmencely as this. I have used the search, but I felt that ther wasn't an answer to my specific question.
I done a bunch of stuff to my sd-1 now, and it sounds much bigger and better now. I just want the od to be slightly 'grittier' now. I read somewhere that you could replace diodes d4 and d6 with 1n4001 and 1n34 diodes in series. Question is: Does that mean adding 2 diodes where only one is meant to be? like what you do when you put 2 resistors in series by twisting the one leg of each up and put the other legs in the board..... One more thing: I only have 1n34 diodes right now. What sound do I get if I replace d4, d5 and d6 with these?

Thanks
Christian

What is your definition of "grit"?

Hard to explain, but I'll do my best. The sd-1 is a pretty smooth sounding od I think. And although brighter and less nasally, mine has stayed very smooth. I suppose I want to put a bit of fuzz in it. But just ever so slightly.... I don't want it to be a fuzz or distortion pedal. It just kinda needs the last touch, a little bit more edge. What does the 1n34 diodes do to the sound?

Hope I cleared it up a bit

ocelot

The best diode setup I found was assymetrical 1x4148 on one side and two of Aron's germ diodes on the other side.
However SD-1/Tubescreamers really don't get gritter I find try a RAT for that gritty sound
