Can't remember seeing this here before.. maybe it is a bit OT, maybe not! It's a fet buffer in a plug, so you can run a balanced low impedance line from your guitar to the DI box. Which is the end of any argument about how much capacitance the cable has, and probably the end of some noise & interference problems as well. uses balanced shielded 2 wire mic cable.
Nice to think, one can have an 'active pickup' without having to do any work at all to the guitar!

cool!
there 's this link too, a preamp cable with a j201, less complicated.

I built one of Don Tillman's one's.  Works and sounds great!  I don't wanna route my old P bass for a battery.  A very handy item for the gig bag.  I use it all the time for theatre and orchestral work when I'm riding the volume pot all night, (stops that treble roll-off/volume pot thing), and when I have to plug into keyboard amps (with lo-Z inputs) at the schools I teach at.   Also, the fet gives it a sort of fat sounding colouration too - very handy when you have to use someone else's cheesy solid state amp at a jam or something.

I used three lithium batteries and a little black plastic box.  Its light and portable.

I think you could just squeeze the output side of the circuit into the female jack if you used SMT or those mini resisters and a Tant cap.  Then you could use the box to simply hold a 9Volt battery. Only slightly heavier, and you'd need a slightly bigger box...
