How much power do you want?  bedroom practice?  band practice?  small club?  soccer stadium?

Many current Marshall and Fender amps use power amp chips.  If you go here - http://www.drtube.com/marshall.htm - and scroll to the bottom, you will see schematics for different solid-state Marshall combo amps.  If you go here - http://www.fender.com/support/amp_schematics/ - you will find Fender schematics.

Many of the 60W and under combo amps use power amp chips from the TDA series (SGS/Thomson), like the TDA2-40, TDA2050, TDA1514, etc.  Once you find an amp with the power level you like/need (and remember that there is very little real difference between a 20W and 40W amp in volume), you can see what chip it uses for power, and then get the datasheet by searching google (e.g., try "TDA2040 pdf" as your search terms).  The datasheet will tell you about the supply voltage needed, and also give some example circuits.

Just remember that you will need to find a good power transformer, and use heat sinks for the power-amp chip.
