Pete Cornish - FX Loops

Hi,
Don't know if any of you read Guitarist mag, but there was an article a few months ago, with an interview w/Pete Cornish. He mentioned that on the Pink Floyd set up there are 24 loops to engage pedals, but when none of the FX are engaged, its like its guitar -> amp.

If possible, could someone please explain to me how this would work. It seems like a clever idea, but i don't understand it.
