This thread is a nice read and explains the mixed clean with distorted signal of the TS style circuit. No wonder I would always try a FET after the op amp to try and distort the entire signal for a more dynamic response. That probably explains why I like clipping to ground diode boxes in a general more than the TS.

As Mark indicated, when a waveform is clipped, its amplitude is reduced. The more a waveform is clipped, the more distorted it sounds, but it also has less "volume" because the peak to peak amplitude is less.

So each type of diode turns on at different voltages. If the peak voltage is less than the "turn on" voltage, nothing happens. Take a look at this:

Note that the waveforms shown for each diode are different scales.

So an LED generally takes more voltage (larger amplitude) to make them clip than a Ge. As Jon said, you have to slam LEDs harder.

So ... does anyone know how to get that " Up Octive " content sound with a clipping arrangement ?
It kinda gives you a two dimensional sound coming from your speaker etc ....

As i said before , for whatever reason , i have always liked the 1n34A + 1n4001 together as a
clipper in TS , just for fun i'm gonna measure the FV to see what it is ....

Greg, can you post pics of both sides of your board?

A germanium will have quite a bit of distortion, and far less output; a Ge will clip even a unity level signal with some pickups, meaning that at 0 on the gain you might get a little bit of distortion. LEDs need to be slammed quite a bit harder. If you're really not hearing a huge distortion difference between the germanium and LEDs, there may be something wrong on the board that you haven't spotted. I'd start checking continuity and all that good stuff.

I'm with midwayfair here. I have a ts with germ, sil and LED clipping and there is a very noticeable difference between all of them. The LEDs will light up if they are clipping. My do, they are 3mm reds.
