Initial signal drop out in a fuzz pedal . . . what could be wrong?

I have a fuzz pedal that has the following problem:  when the pedal is engaged, the signal noticeably drops out for an instant, and then there is the fuzz sound.  What could be causing the drop out?

Substantially anything in the known universe **could** be causing the problem.

It would help a bit if you could describe what fuzz pedal, whether commercial or home made, how it's powered, when the battery was changed (if it's battery powered), whether it started doing this suddenly, whether it's ever worked correctly or not, that kind of thing. That would help us narrow it down a bit.
