What parts to have on hand??

Sorry if this has been covered before...but can anyone point me to a "shopping list" of common parts to have on hand? I realize that different pedals will have some unique components but I'm sure there must be some stuff that's fairly common. Living in our modern "disposable world" it's not as easy as just going to the local electroniics store to buy components. It's all mail-order anymore. 
AND....I'm looking for good sources of recycled germanium transistors. I'm thinking old radios and TV's...but what are some other things to look for...and what era (mid 70's??) were germanium trannys phased-out? Got an old Aiwa radio at the thrift store yesterday with 14 transisitors for $1.00! I was pretty stoked about that one.
