What controls for a compressor?

My cousin asked me to make a compressor. He is into Pink Floyd a lot. Now I wonder: should I copy Gilmour stuff or make a more intelligent move? What is a good control for on a compressor? And how simple can it get without losing grip on the sound?

Is there a tweak to the SupaSustain?
What about the elektor compressor?

Rules apply only for those who are not allowed to break them

here's some controls for you - compression ratio, threshold level, attack time and release time.
trash is often friendly

Treshold = point where the compressions starts
Compression= ratio of gains below and above treshold
attack = response time
release = decay time

Fun in digital, but maybe not very simplicity/quality minded in analog right?

OK, the chip is $8.75 from SmallBear... but, you get a circuit that will work without endless tweaking and stress.
I just don't like the look of that Elektor one... and any with 3080s have a certain amount of noise...

The 2166 has built in noise reduction.  It not only compresses/limits peaks but expands low signals to yield a smart gating function.  Check out the datasheet for it.

Anyone know if these chips have a common lineage with the SSM2120?  I've still got a couple of those from the old days.

Wow, now I am interested..... How does it sound (any comparison with other compressors)?
Am learning something new every day here
