Ok so i've moved on to something that seemed alittle more complex for me.  I'm trying to build a blue clipper and after finding the runoffgroove schematics i see some of what i need to fix.  I major thing is that i'm not sure how the connections on the op amp go.  Following the layout and then looking at the back of the op amp package, the connections don't make since.  I'm pulling my hair out with this one.  any help would be greatly appreciated, i know this is a simple problem but please bare with me.

please make sure the types of opamps are compatible.
Is it a single opamp or is it only one used of a dual opamp?
TL071, OP07, 741, ... compatible singles
TL072, RC4558, LM1458, LM358, ... compatible duals

FIrst ... use a socket or burn the IC...took me a while to know to use sockets.
Second, with the IC 'standing like bug' pintips on the table, turn it so the dot on the top of it is in the left hand top corner. It indicates pin 1.
 1*       8
 2         7
 3         6
 4         5
You count down the left side...1234, then cross over to the right...and count 5678, up the right side.

Of course. just don't use the other pins. I thought they should be grounded, those non-used ones.

there are different ways to 'stabilize' the unused opamp when using a dual in a single OA circuit.
Personally I prefer the low'ly LM741 for the DIST+/NC Type circuits, otherwise check out 'Liquid Drive'...which uses 'higher end' parts and departs the 'roughness' of the DIST+ sound producing a smoother OD tone...IME.
The way I do it is just ground both the + and _ inputs of the unused side of a DUAL OA. This holds the output 'still too.
