Sitting around bored on Friday night, I decided to build a pedal out of spare parts I had lying around. I choose Tim Escobedo's utility boost for two simple reasons. I had all the parts to build it. I needed a boost. After about an hour behind the soldering iron, my project was complete, and I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with this modest little circuit. I've built three other boosts including a rangemaster (gave them all away...), but this is my favorite. It gives a great deal of extra volume and has a gain knob that adds just a little bite (I used a JFET). As the name implies, it has a lot of utility as it can be very transparent with the gain turned down, or it can fatten up your tone a bit with the gain cranked. I haven't heard many people mention this project, so I figured I'd give my two cents and say that I haven't been so satisfied with a small circuit since the Bazz Fuss.

i've look'd at the utility boost a few times, as i frequent tim's circuit snippets alot, but never have built it. i will give it a try here in the near future sounds like something i'd like. tim definitely does quality circuits. everyone i've tried i've liked a bunch. :icon_mrgreen:

Yep...been there...done that...very pleased.
His was one of the first DIY sites I discovered.
That was one of my first builds and because many of his circuits are simple...I tried quite a few with great results.
