I was thinking of building a shaka tube into the pre-amp of my 3886 amp. if there is a problem with just this, someone please tell me. but anyway, the main point of this post is to ask about powering the shaka tube. i know it runs on 12 volts, but, the trasnformer i'm going to use will be putting out 28v. so, i have a few questions...

1. I think i already know the answer to this, but i'll ask anyway. is it possible to run the shaka tube on 28v in parrallel with the 3886? Would it fry the circuit, or just give me more clean headroom? the computer i'm at right now can't open pdf's, so i can't check out the tlo72 data sheet to see how much it can handle.

2. can i use voltage regulators to limit the voltage to 12v? somehow the idea of feeding 28v @ 1a into a 12v regulator doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

3. if i go the route of a seperate transformer, how many amps should it put out? would just a small 12v transformer (like the ones small bear carries) be enough?

again, if this is a bad idea, someone please let me know. not only am i new at amp building, i'm new at tubes, too, so this will be quite a learning experience for me. and now i'm off to search, search, and search some more for tube and amp info.

***edit

oh wow! i'm an idiot, i really should have looked harder at the schematic. it has a little section on how to wire up a transformer to it. so, i tlooks like i will, after all, have to get a seperate 12v transformer. ok. will the small one from small bear be powerfull enough, or will i have to go with the 200ma tranformer? goodness. i should read more.  now i have another question abuot the bias, though. is it just a pot hooked up between the v+ and v-?

now that i look at this, the could be a really cool amp project.

I have a 800mA 12VAC wall wart powering my Shaka Tube. That gives it just the right voltage. I don't think 200mA is going to be quite enough, though - I used a 300mA for my first build, and it was a little squirelly. I am pretty sure that Aron used something like a 500mA wall wart for his. I tried doing a search to find out exactly what he used, but I can't find it...  :icon_confused:

I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I used a Radio Shack overpriced wall wart. I believe it was 500ma.

QuoteI believe it was 500ma.

That's what I'm remembering.
